My 1st Bone Surgery, July 7, 2002

I had my first bone surgery at the Lagos State Accident (General) Hospital, where i was transferred to. The broken bones were brought together and an external fixation was used to hold my bones together, it was really scary at first when i saw it. Iron metals with screws passed through my flesh to hold my bones together. That General hospital was another world i was not used to, there i met different characters of people, the good, the bad, the ugly, patients, Doctors and Nurses alike. Anyway God saw me though the 6 weeks, after which the external fixations where removed and i was discharged with a POP (Plaster Of Paris) on my leg. I quickly learnt how to use the crutches so i can move about on my own. My next appointment with my doctor was 6 weeks later. It was not easy carrying the POP with all the heat and itching for 6 weeks. So on the day i was to meet with my doctor, i was happy and excited that the POP will be removed but i was dissapointed when i was asked to carry it for another 6 weeks. If only i had obeyed my doctor then i wouldn't have passed through so much. To cut long story short, my parents were adviced to take me to a traditional bone setter. which they did. The Ijaw bone setter tried, i was able to walk with the leg, but because my external wounds were not properly healed before the traditionalist started his massage, my bones became infected. This led to a non-union of my bones and cost me a second bone surgery 2 years later, May 18 2004 at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.
